Career Management Starts With the Basics

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

In his recent e-newsletter, famed sales guru Jeffrey Gitomer had a great and simple video I wanted to bring to your attention (it’s at this YouTube link. The topic is about what he does to maintain his success.

What struck me was the simplicity of his approach – in a time where everybody is looking for “what’s new” he brings the basics back in vogue. (I’ll let you watch the video to discover his four points).

A theme in his concept is the importance of taking a disciplined approach to ones life and career. One of my mentors (Chic Lewis) has long emphasized the importance of this in his concept, the “disciplines of management.” Basically, taking a systematic approach, applied well and applied consistently to your business, every day – PERIOD.

When people look at their own career management, there is often too much going after the flavor of the month. Whereas if you follow Jeffrey’s or Chic’s ideas, work on developing yourself and your business every day, doing the right things and then repeat. I know it sounds simplistic, but it works in the same way any long term venture does. The journey starts with the first step and then proceeds forward well and consistently, without letting distractions get in the way.

I encourage you to watch the video. And then let me know via commenting on the blog or backchannel through email (drjim@tsgdrjim.com) – what you do to make yourself successful?
