Ever find yourself becoming a bit repetitive in the things you are doing? Yes, we hear repeatedly that you need to “get outside the box” – but how do you actually do that?

In Seth Godin’s new book, “Poke the Box,” he gives an easy to read and to-the-point treatment of how to do just that. As a corporate psychologist, I found his approach very motivational and psychological (while also being enjoyable – not an easy balance to strike).

Basically, he has greatly expanded on Nike’s theme of “Just Do It.” In essence, Godin notes that we are all regularly presented with opportunities to try new things. Yet, we can all too easily get caught in the habits and ruts that propel us through the day.

Taking that a step further, I find that many executives overly emphasize how their days are “productive” but don’t do enough to make sure their days are “effective.” When the day is done, it doesn’t matter how much you do, but how much of what you do – matters. And, that is Godin’s central point.

So, if you find you’re itching to try something new in your business or job, but feel the day-to-day work has got you in a rut, you might want to give “Poke the Box” a try. It will pleasantly open your eyes to new opportunities around you and get you outside your own box.

Happy reading!

This is a fascinating book on social media. Yes, there’s a ton being written on social media. But “Crush It” takes a different approach which I really liked.

First some background which will help you to understand why I’m reviewing a book on social media (because some of you are thinking, “Jim, you’re a corporate psychologist – where does social media fit into your interests?” Good question.

If you’re reading this, you know that I recently launched this blog. My interest in “Crush It” is that it’s kind of a motivational book on getting into blogging. I felt that something that put some “gas in my tank” to get me writing, and keep me writing, would be helpful. It worked.

Vaynerchuk loves blogging. His profession is retail wine sales, but he’s known for his video blog (some people call that a “vlog” for the uninitiated). Anyway, his Nike-esque “just do it” approach made a lot of sense to me. He also makes good points for how you need to connect your blog with other aspects of your own social media universe (i.e., your website, LinkedIn, etc.).

The book is a quick read (I read it in one evening) and it held my attention. If you are involved in social media in your company, or are a small business owner and by definition, your own marketing person, the book will get your fingers typing and get you going!
